How to design a canvas gallery wall | Frisco, TX Newborn & Maternity Photographer

As a luxury boutique photographer, a part of my job is to provide a professional opinion around what images will look best on a client’s wall, and in what arrangement. I’ve always had the ability to show clients their images on an iPad and also separately draw rectangles on a piece of paper to give someone an idea for my vision. This lasted a bit longer than it should have, but it worked… some of the time. I knew I needed a better way to show them what their portraits would look like on a wall so I started doing some research.

I found two companies at the time that offered what I wanted so I tested them out and went with the one I thought had the most relevant features. It worked! It allowed me to be able pull my images into a program that had varying backgrounds like bedrooms and living rooms. This provided the visualization we all wanted to see. Nowadays there are quite a few different companies that offer visualization programs for photographers to use but guess what, I’ve stuck with my original selection to this day! I even bought a new iPad (over Black Friday, yes) because the program I chose no longer worked fully with my original first generation iPad 😔😆.

First thing’s first, pick your favorite images. It can be a much longer process than expected if you try and design the wall with about 50 images in front of you to choose from. Narrow down your choices first. Which images elicit emotion, give you that warm cozy feeling, or make you want to share with friends? Selecting your top 5 images is great starting point. Now, you can build around those…

The “rules” when building a gallery wall… don’t always have to be followed. Although most people say to stick with odd numbers of canvases because it’s more visually pleasing, it’s not a hard and fast rule. I can have two canvases next to each other that work perfectly fine together; but, I might just alter the sizes so they “fit” well together. That being said, I pay most attention to colors when designing a gallery wall. If you are creating a 3 canvas collage, you want to make sure the colors are somewhat balanced. Putting blue, white, blue works but blue, blue, white would feel unbalanced. Get my point? D3EF1E98-07EA-40B1-B5EE-C661F09303C8

Sizing is an important factor, too. You need to make sure to choose appropriate sizes for your wall. An 8×10 May look like a decent size on a table, but when it goes on a wall above a couch, you can bet your bottom dollar that it won’t look very good because it’s not an appropriate size for a canvas hanging on a wall. Personally, I like to keep canvases sized anywhere from 30×40 to 16×20. This range of  sizes is pretty appropriate for wall art. The final step is to simply take a step back and make sure the design you have created is something you will want to view for years to come.

If you’ve read this far, I hope you feel a little more confident in the steps to design your perfect gallery wall. Take a look at a few canvas gallery walls I’ve designed for clients for their Reveals. I’ve included the sizes on the walls (below the canvases) for your benefit.

Putting your memories on your walls shows you value your relationships.

Which should you choose? Milk Bath vs. Natural Light Maternity Shoot| Dallas, TX Maternity Photographer

I always get asked, “What’s the difference between a milk bath and outdoor maternity session?”, and I get inquiries that say “I’m interested in booking a milk bath shoot with you and would like my husband included. Is this possible?”. So after Many many many responses and consistently answering the same questions, I decided it was a good time to explain the sessions in more detail…

At K-Rae Images, there are two main types of maternity photoshoots offered: Milk Bath Maternity and Natural Light Maternity.

Milk Bath Maternity shoots are unique since few photographers offer this, and they are more artistic so to speak. Women who are drawn to these images understand how “new” they are to maternity photography and that they will be receiving something special that lots of people may not even know exist. This is for a mom who wants the intimate bond between her and baby captured, while relaxing in a warm milky bath with fragrant flowers, fruit, or other items floating around. Fresh Lace gowns are offered to be used during the shoot, and mom’s can choose to have the photos done in the nude or tastefully covered with material provided. The only downside to milk bath sessions in my personal opinion is that they don’t include a significant other or children – this is one reason why mom’s who choose this option may also select to have a natural light shoot as well. To see the whole milk bath process, visit my article, Dallas Milk Bath Maternity Photoshoot Demystified – K-Rae Images.

Natural Light Maternity shoots are more common and are done outdoors at a location of the client’s choice. At K-Rae Images, there are three locations around Dallas that I frequent because I’ve found some amazing areas that always draw me back. I also have clients specifically request these spots after seeing my images. In outdoor shoots, mom’s get to choose from my closet of gowns and pick anything from belly showing to long sleeve gowns and even gowns with a long train to throw in the air if desired! The creativity comes into play in this type of shoot more in the environment, lighting, and posing aspects. Significant others and other children (even pets) can be included here.

London Family Mini Session | Plano, TX Family Photographer

Mini sessions during the holiday season are always so much fun for me. I get the chance to take photos for many different people, from couples to families and even pets. This allows me to grab a variety of shots in a pretty short time frame. Plus, let’s face it, families with little ones can’t always last a whole hour anyway so you really have to leverage the “focused” time you can get!

Here’s a collage of photos from my holiday photo session in Plano, TX with the London Family. They are returning clients, and their girls are all so full of life!

They went with red, white, and navy as their color scheme, and I brought along my navy quilt to accent their photos.
